What is the name of asteroid 55 Pandora’s discoverer?

The story behind the answer

George Mary Searle discovered asteroid 55 Pandora.

Searle discovered Pandora on September 10, 1858, at the Albany Observatory in New York. The object was later numbered 55, indicating its place among the asteroids whose orbits had been established and recognized at the time. Pandora is a main-belt asteroid, so it travels around the Sun rather than orbiting Saturn.

The asteroid’s name comes from Pandora in Greek mythology, following the nineteenth-century practice of assigning classical names to newly discovered minor planets. Its designation creates a frequent source of confusion with Pandora, Saturn’s moon, which was discovered much later by Voyager 1, and with the phrase “Pandora’s box.”

Asteroid 55 Pandora is relatively small compared with the largest main-belt objects, but its discovery is historically notable because it was one of Searle’s important astronomical achievements.
