What is the name of Africa’s highest mountain, located in Tanzania?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif near Tanzania’s border with Kenya. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest, and Uhuru Peak on its crater rim is the mountain’s highest point. Unlike many of the world’s tallest mountains, Kilimanjaro stands alone rather than forming part of a major range.

The mountain’s great elevation creates several ecological zones, from cultivated lower slopes through rainforest and alpine heath to a cold, glaciated summit. Its glaciers have retreated considerably since the late nineteenth century, although the exact causes include changing precipitation as well as regional warming.

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest mountain, while Mount Meru is another major Tanzanian volcano. The name Kilimanjaro is widely used in English, but the origins and precise meaning of the name have been debated by historians and linguists.
