What is the name of Abraham Lincoln's home in Springfield, Illinois?

Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Illinois, was called the Lincoln Home. Located at the corner of Eighth and Jackson Streets, it was the only house Lincoln ever owned.

Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln purchased the house in 1844, shortly after their marriage, and expanded it over the years as their family grew. The home became the center of the family’s life while Lincoln practiced law and served in Illinois politics. It was also where he lived before winning the presidency in 1860.

The Lincolns left the house in February 1861 for Washington, D.C. After Lincoln’s assassination, Robert Todd Lincoln eventually donated the property to the state of Illinois. Today it is preserved as the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, administered by the National Park Service.

“Lincoln Cottage” is a common confusion because Lincoln also spent time at the Soldiers’ Home in Washington, but that was a separate presidential retreat, not his Springfield residence.
