France is the most visited country for international tourism, measured by international tourist arrivals. UN Tourism reported about 100 million international arrivals in 2023, and approximately 102 million in 2024.
France’s appeal comes from an unusually broad mix of attractions. Paris draws visitors to landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre-Dame, while other travellers visit the French Riviera, Alpine resorts, Atlantic beaches, wine regions, castles and historic towns. Its central position in Europe also makes it easy to reach by train, road and short-haul flight.
The ranking measures arrivals, not necessarily tourism revenue, overnight stays or the number of unique people. A traveller who enters France during a wider European trip may count as an international arrival, even if France is not the main destination. The United States often leads in tourism receipts, while Spain regularly ranks close behind France in visitor numbers. France’s total also includes overseas regions and territories in some tourism statistics.
