What is the Moon's approximate distance from Earth in kilometers?

The story behind the answer

The Moon’s approximate distance from Earth is 384,400 kilometers.

This figure is the average distance from Earth’s center to the Moon’s center, also called the mean lunar distance. It is commonly rounded to 384,400 km because the Moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle.

The actual distance changes during each orbit. At its closest point, called perigee, the Moon is roughly 356,500 km away; at its farthest point, called apogee, it is about 406,700 km away. This changing distance affects the Moon’s apparent size in the sky and helps produce phenomena such as supermoons.

The Moon is about 1.3 light-seconds from Earth, meaning light and radio signals take just over one second to cross the gap. Laser-ranging experiments have also shown that the Moon is slowly moving away from Earth by about 3.8 cm per year.
