What is the modern Turkish name of Hisarlık, the archaeological site identified with ancient Troy?

The story behind the answer

Hisarlık is the modern Turkish name of the archaeological mound identified with ancient Troy. The site lies in northwestern Turkey, near the Dardanelles, in the modern province of Çanakkale.

The identification became famous through excavations begun by Heinrich Schliemann in the 19th century. Schliemann believed the mound contained Homeric Troy, although his methods damaged some archaeological layers and his claims about specific finds remain controversial.

Archaeologists now recognize multiple settlement layers at Hisarlık. Troy VI and Troy VIIa are often discussed in connection with the historical background that may have inspired stories of the Trojan War, though no layer can prove the events of the epic literally occurred.

The site is also known as Truva in modern Turkish usage. UNESCO added the Archaeological Site of Troy to its World Heritage List in 1998.
