Italy’s Frecciarossa 1000 train has a maximum design speed of 400 km/h.
The train, also designated ETR 1000, was developed for high-speed services in Italy and is operated by Trenitalia. Its design speed is higher than the maximum speed normally used in regular Italian passenger service.
Frecciarossa means “Red Arrow,” a name used for Trenitalia’s premium high-speed services. The train is an electric multiple unit with distributed traction, meaning propulsion equipment is spread through the train rather than concentrated in a single locomotive.
A key distinction is between design speed, test speed, and routine operating speed. The 400 km/h figure describes the train’s design capability, not the speed reached on every scheduled journey.
