What is the mascot in the Android logo commonly called?

The story behind the answer

The mascot in the Android logo is commonly called Bugdroid.

Bugdroid is the small green robot associated with Google’s Android operating system. The character was created by graphic designer Irina Blok and her team in 2007, before Android’s public launch. Its simple body, antennae, and lack of a detailed face made it easy to reproduce on software, packaging, signs, and developer materials.

The name combines “bug,” a familiar computing term, with “droid,” a shortened form of android. Google has often used the mascot informally, while the Android wordmark and robot head have changed across different identity systems. In 2019, Google updated the brand to emphasize the robot’s head and a revised wordmark.

Bugdroid is not the name of the operating system itself. Android is the platform; Bugdroid is its visual mascot. The character is also distinct from the fictional droids of Star Wars, despite the similar-sounding word.
