What is the main prey of an African fish eagle?

The story behind the answer

Fish are the main prey of the African fish eagle. This large raptor lives near lakes, rivers, and wetlands across much of sub-Saharan Africa, where it watches from a perch and swoops down to seize aquatic prey with its powerful talons.

The African fish eagle’s diet is broader than its name suggests. It also takes waterbirds, reptiles, amphibians, and carrion when opportunities arise. Its hooked bill tears food apart, while roughened foot surfaces and strong claws help it grip slippery prey.

Its loud, ringing call is one of the best-known sounds around African waterways. The species resembles the bald eagle in appearance and ecological role, but the two are different species. The African fish eagle belongs to the genus Haliaeetus, which includes several sea and fish eagles. It commonly nests in large trees near water and may reuse a nest over many years.
