The main form of energy produced by a laser is light. A laser creates light through stimulated emission, in which excited atoms or molecules release photons that match one another in wavelength, direction, and phase.

The word “laser” is an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” Unlike ordinary bulbs, which emit light in many directions and wavelengths, lasers typically produce a narrow, highly organized beam. This coherence allows laser light to travel long distances, focus on tiny spots, and carry information through optical fibers.

“Light” does not always mean visible light. Some lasers emit infrared, ultraviolet, or even X-ray radiation, all of which are forms of electromagnetic radiation. The first working laser was built by Theodore Maiman in 1960, using a ruby crystal. Lasers are now used in barcode scanners, surgery, communications, manufacturing, optical-disc readers, and scientific instruments. A related device called a maser produces coherent microwave radiation instead of optical-frequency radiation.
