What is the lowest chamber in the Great Pyramid called?
Answer
Subterranean Chamber
Answer
Subterranean Chamber
The lowest chamber in the Great Pyramid is called the Subterranean Chamber. It is also sometimes known as the Pit and is the only one of the pyramid’s three principal chambers cut into the bedrock beneath the monument.
The chamber lies at the end of the Descending Passage, roughly 27 metres below the pyramid’s base level. Its western half was left unfinished, with quarrying trenches still visible in the floor and walls. A narrow blind corridor extends from the chamber, and a later excavation created the deep Pit Shaft in its floor.
The Subterranean Chamber may have been intended as Khufu’s original burial chamber before the plan changed to a higher chamber inside the pyramid. The Queen’s Chamber and King’s Chamber are both located above ground within the pyramid’s masonry. The Grand Gallery is not a burial chamber at all; it is a monumental sloping passage leading toward the upper chambers.
