What is the longest snake?

The story behind the answer

The longest snake is the reticulated python. Native to South and Southeast Asia, Malayopython reticulatus is a nonvenomous constrictor capable of exceeding 6 metres, making it the longest living snake species by standard length records.

Large specimens are uncommon, and measuring a living python is surprisingly difficult because the animal bends, stretches, and can move its skin relative to its body. One scientifically measured specimen from Indonesia reached 6.95 metres. Claims of snakes 10 metres or more are generally treated cautiously when they lack a preserved specimen or rigorous measurement.

The reticulated python is often mixed up with the green anaconda. Anacondas are shorter on average but much heavier and bulkier; the green anaconda is generally regarded as the heaviest snake. The Burmese python is also a very large species, but it does not normally surpass the reticulated python in length.

The reticulated python’s name refers to its netlike pattern. It is an excellent swimmer, and individuals have spread across many islands within its Asian range.
