What is the longest river located entirely in Europe?

The story behind the answer

The Volga River is the longest river located entirely in Europe.

The Volga flows for about 3,530 kilometres through western Russia before emptying into the Caspian Sea. It rises in the Valdai Hills northwest of Moscow and passes through or near major cities including Tver, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara and Volgograd. Its enormous drainage basin has made it central to transport, agriculture, industry and settlement across Russia.

The river is sometimes compared with the Danube, which crosses more countries and is Europe’s second-longest river. The Volga, however, is longer and remains entirely within one country. The Volga Delta, where the river reaches the Caspian Sea, is one of Europe’s largest river deltas and supports rich wetlands. The river freezes for much of the colder season in its upper and middle sections, although conditions vary along its length.
