What is the listed running time range for Sherlock episodes?

The story behind the answer

Sherlock episodes have a listed running time of 85–90 minutes.

That unusually long format helped define the BBC series. Rather than using the conventional 45-to-50-minute length common for many television dramas, Sherlock generally presents each story as a feature-length episode. The extended runtime gives its mysteries room for layered deductions, false leads, character conflict, and elaborate climaxes.

The format emerged during development. The BBC originally considered Sherlock as a more conventional 60-minute production, but the broadcast version was reworked into three 90-minute episodes for the first series. Later episodes generally remained within the listed 85–90-minute range.

The show’s episode count can also be confusing. It contains four three-episode series plus the feature-length special “The Abominable Bride,” for 13 episodes in total. The special has a distinctive Victorian setting, but it follows the same broadly extended presentation style.

The runtime is therefore not 30–45 or 45–50 minutes, and the series is not normally listed as a 100–120-minute program.
