What is the largest reptile?

The story behind the answer

The largest living reptile is the saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. It is also the largest crocodilian and one of the most powerful predators alive today.

Saltwater crocodiles inhabit coastal waters, mangrove swamps, estuaries, brackish wetlands, and freshwater rivers from eastern India through Southeast Asia to northern Australia and parts of Micronesia. Despite its name, the species is comfortable in freshwater as well as seawater, and individuals can travel long distances through marine environments.

Adult males are typically around 3.9–5 metres long, though exceptional animals grow larger. The largest confirmed saltwater crocodile measured 6.32 metres and weighed about 1,360 kilograms. Lolong, captured in the Philippines in 2011, measured 6.17 metres and was recognized as the largest crocodile measured alive at the time.

The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard, not the largest reptile overall. American alligators and Nile crocodiles are also formidable reptiles, but the saltwater crocodile generally exceeds them in maximum length and mass. Reports of crocodiles over 7 metres exist, though many remain unverified.
