What is the largest liquid hydrocarbon sea on Titan?
Answer
Kraken Mare
Answer
Kraken Mare
Kraken Mare is the largest liquid hydrocarbon sea on Titan. Located near Titan's north pole, it covers roughly 500,000 square kilometers and is larger than Earth's Caspian Sea by surface area.
Unlike terrestrial seas, Kraken Mare is not filled with water. Titan's surface temperature is about 94 kelvins, cold enough for methane and ethane to remain liquid. Radar observations from the Cassini spacecraft revealed its broad shoreline, islands, bays, and channels, while later radar-altimetry measurements helped estimate its depth.
The sea was discovered during Cassini's survey of Titan and named in 2008 after the legendary Kraken, a giant sea monster. Its largest identified island is Mayda Insula. One narrow passage, Seldon Fretum, has been informally called the Throat of Kraken because of its resemblance to a strait.
Ligeia Mare is Titan's second-largest sea, while Punga Mare is another major northern sea. Ontario Lacus, despite its prominence, is much smaller and lies near Titan's south pole. Together, Titan's seas and lakes form part of a methane cycle analogous to Earth's water cycle.
