What is the largest lake in Patagonia?
Answer
General Carrera Lake
Answer
General Carrera Lake
The largest lake in Patagonia is General Carrera Lake, also called Lake Buenos Aires.
This transboundary lake lies in the Andes between Chile and Argentina. Chile uses the name General Carrera, while Argentina calls its portion Lake Buenos Aires; together, the two sections form one lake with a surface area of about 1,850 square kilometers.
The lake is a glacially shaped, moraine-dammed basin fed by several rivers and drained westward through Bertrand Lake into the Baker River, which reaches the Pacific. Its striking blue water and sculpted Marble Caves have made it one of Chilean Patagonia’s signature landscapes.
Readers often confuse it with Lago Argentino, the largest lake entirely within Argentina, or with Nahuel Huapi, one of northern Patagonia’s best-known lakes. General Carrera’s two national names can also make it look like two separate lakes in maps or travel guides.
