What is the largest frog?

The story behind the answer

The largest frog is the Goliath frog.

The Goliath frog (Conraua goliath) lives in fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls in parts of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Adults can reach about 45 centimetres in snout-to-vent length and weigh up to roughly 4.5 kilograms, making it the largest living frog by both body length and mass.

Its enormous size is especially striking because its eggs and tadpoles are not unusually large compared with those of other frogs. The species has fully webbed toes, powerful hind legs, and no vocal sac, so it does not produce the familiar loud calls associated with many frogs. Its local name, giant slippery frog, reflects its smooth, aquatic lifestyle.

A common mix-up is confusing the Goliath frog with the largest toads, such as the cane toad. Toads belong to the same broad amphibian group but are not frogs in the strict common-name sense. Goliath frogs are threatened by habitat loss, hunting for food, and collection for the pet trade.
