What is the largest egg laid by any living animal?
Answer
Ostrich egg
Answer
Ostrich egg
The ostrich egg is the largest egg laid by any living animal. It is produced by the common ostrich, Struthio camelus, and is the largest egg among living birds and living egg-laying animals.
An average ostrich egg is about 15 centimetres long, 13 centimetres wide and 1.4 kilograms in mass—more than 20 times the weight of a chicken egg. Its shell is thick, glossy and cream-coloured, with fine pits, and is strong enough to withstand substantial pressure.
The record applies to living animals. Extinct elephant birds and some moa laid larger eggs, which is why “largest bird egg ever” is a different question. Ostriches also lay communally: a dominant female’s eggs share a nest with those of other females, while females incubate by day and males by night. Humans have used the shells as containers and decorative objects for thousands of years.
