What is the largest animal ever to live on Earth?

The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth. This baleen whale can exceed 30 metres in length and is substantially heavier than any living land animal or other confirmed animal species.

The largest reliably recorded blue whales reached about 33.6 metres, while the heaviest measured specimen weighed roughly 190 tonnes. Females are generally larger than males. Even the heart of a stranded North Atlantic blue whale weighed around 180 kilograms, illustrating the enormous scale of the species.

Blue whales evolved a highly efficient way to support that size: they filter-feed on tiny crustaceans, especially krill. During feeding, a whale can engulf a huge volume of water, then push the water back through flexible baleen plates while retaining its prey. Their streamlined bodies and powerful tails allow them to migrate across entire ocean basins.

Fossil contenders such as Perucetus have occasionally been proposed as heavier, but those estimates rely on fragmentary remains and have been revised downward. That uncertainty explains why careful references usually say the blue whale is the largest animal known, rather than claiming every extinct estimate is settled.
