What is the internationally recognized height of Mount Everest?

The story behind the answer

The internationally recognized height of Mount Everest is 8,848.86 metres.

Nepal and China announced this joint height in 2020 after new surveys measured the mountain using modern satellite positioning and other techniques. The figure includes the snow and ice cap on the summit.

Mount Everest lies in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and Tibet, an autonomous region of China. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, while in Tibet it is known as Chomolungma.

Earlier official measurements differed slightly because survey methods and decisions about summit snow varied. Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, but Mauna Kea extends higher from its underwater base.
