The first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS has the internal model code C219.
Introduced for the 2004 model year, the C219 was Mercedes-Benz’s first CLS generation and remained in production from 2003 to 2010. Its fastback, four-door-coupé design created a new niche between a conventional executive sedan and a luxury coupé.
The C219 was based on the W211-generation E-Class platform and shared its 2,854-millimetre wheelbase, major mechanical components, engines, and transmissions. Mercedes nevertheless marketed it as a distinct CLS line, emphasizing its four-seat layout and lower, more dramatic roofline.
A common mix-up is the designation W219, which is frequently used in the United States and in enthusiast discussions. C219 is the European model designation and the code used in the specific model title; W219 is an alternate designation rather than a different first-generation CLS. The second generation moved to the C218 code, while the shooting-brake version was designated X218.
