This range is slightly acidic to neutral, with pH 7.0 representing neutrality. Many vegetables grow especially well around pH 6.5 because essential nutrients are generally available in useful forms there. Soil pH affects nutrient solubility, microbial activity, and the plant’s ability to absorb elements such as phosphorus, iron, and manganese.

The range is a broad rule rather than a universal requirement. Individual crops have their own preferences: potatoes often tolerate or prefer more acidic soil, while some brassicas perform well closer to neutral. A vegetable can still grow outside its preferred range, but nutrient deficiencies or toxicities become more likely as conditions move toward strongly acidic or alkaline values.
