What is the highest waterfall in Europe?

The highest waterfall in Europe is Vinnufossen, also called Vinnufallet. This tiered waterfall descends about 860 metres from the Vinnufjellet mountain near Sunndalsøra in Norway.

Vinnufossen is fed partly by meltwater from the Vinnufonna glacier. Its water drops in several stages before joining the Driva River near Hoelsand. The falls are classified as a horsetail waterfall because the water maintains a relatively narrow, cascading stream as it plunges down the mountainside.

The waterfall's height is measured as the total vertical descent of its successive drops, not as one uninterrupted free fall. That distinction explains why some lists rank waterfalls differently. Dettifoss in Iceland, for example, is famous for its immense water volume and power, but it is far shorter. France's Gavarnie Falls and Switzerland's Rhine Falls are also well-known European waterfalls, yet neither reaches Vinnufossen's total height.

Vinnufossen is also regularly listed among the world's tallest waterfalls, although rankings can vary depending on measurement methods and whether seasonal or glacier-fed falls are included.
