What is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world?

The story behind the answer

The highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela. Its total height is about 979 metres, including an uninterrupted main plunge of approximately 807 metres.

The waterfall drops from the edge of Auyán-tepui, a flat-topped mountain in Canaima National Park in Bolívar State. Water from the Churún River spills over the sandstone cliff, often breaking into mist before reaching the lower cascades and rapids. Canaima National Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The waterfall is known locally as Kerepakupai Merú, a name from the Indigenous Pemon language. “Angel Falls” became internationally established after American aviator Jimmy Angel flew over it in 1933; the English name honours him, although Indigenous communities had known the falls long before his flight.

Tugela Falls is sometimes cited in debates about waterfall rankings because its total descent is measured differently. Victoria Falls is far wider, and Niagara Falls carries much more water, but neither has Angel Falls’ uninterrupted vertical drop.
