What is the highest suspension bridge in the United States, spanning the Arkansas River?
Answer
Royal Gorge Bridge
Answer
Royal Gorge Bridge
The Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the United States, spanning Colorado's Arkansas River. Its deck hangs about 955 feet (291 meters) above the river in Royal Gorge near Cañon City.
George E. Cole designed the bridge, which was built in just six months between June and November 1929. It opened to visitors on December 8 that year at a cost of $350,000. The bridge is 1,260 feet long, with an 880-foot main span, and originally carried pedestrians rather than highway traffic.
The bridge was once the highest bridge in the world, a title it held from 1929 until China's Liuguanghe Bridge surpassed it in 2001. China later took the record for highest suspension bridge as well, but the Royal Gorge Bridge remains the highest bridge in the United States.
Several answer choices describe different kinds of landmarks. The Millau Viaduct is a French cable-stayed bridge, Bixby Creek Bridge is a California concrete arch, and Mackinac Bridge is a much longer Michigan suspension bridge. None crosses the Arkansas River or reaches the Royal Gorge Bridge's height above the water.
