What is the highest summit in Spain's Picos de Europa?

The highest summit in Spain’s Picos de Europa is Torre de Cerredo.

Also called Torrecerredo or Torre Cerredo, the peak rises to about 2,650 metres in the central Urrieles Massif. Its summit lies on the boundary between Asturias and León, and it is both the highest point of the Picos de Europa and the highest summit in the Cantabrian Mountains.

The Picos are a limestone mountain range in northern Spain, divided into western, central and eastern massifs. Torre de Cerredo’s dramatic relief includes a drop of roughly 2,200 metres toward the Cares River, giving the peak a much greater visual presence than its elevation alone suggests.

Several nearby names cause confusion. Torre del Llambrión is a close rival in height, while Peña Vieja is the highest summit in Cantabria. Naranjo de Bulnes, or Picu Urriellu, is far more famous in Spanish climbing history, but it is not the range’s highest summit. The first recorded ascent of Torre de Cerredo took place in 1882.
