What is the highest point in Qatar?

The highest point in Qatar is Qurayn Abu al Bawl, a hill rising about 103 metres (338 feet) above sea level.

It lies in southern Qatar, near the peninsula’s border with Saudi Arabia. Qatar is an exceptionally flat country, so this modest limestone hill qualifies as its national high point. The surrounding southern terrain is higher and more rugged than the northern part of the peninsula, where elevations generally remain much lower.

Qurayn Abu al Bawl is also recorded under several variant names, including Qurain Abu al-Bawl, Gurain al Balbul and Tuwayyir Al Hamir. These names can make maps and quiz references appear to point to different places, even though they refer to the same high point.

A common mix-up is Jebel Hafeet, a much taller mountain associated with the United Arab Emirates, and Jabal Thawr, a mountain near Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Neither is in Qatar. Qatar’s highest point is a low hill rather than a dramatic mountain, reflecting the country’s predominantly flat limestone landscape.
