What is the highest mountain in the Ural Mountains?
Answer
Mount Narodnaya
Answer
Mount Narodnaya
The highest mountain in the Ural Mountains is Mount Narodnaya, which rises to 1,894 meters in Russia.
Mount Narodnaya stands in the northern Urals, near the boundary between the Komi Republic and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Its name means “People’s Mountain,” although it is also known by names including Naroda and Poenurr. The summit lies close to the main watershed separating rivers flowing toward Europe from those flowing toward Siberia.
The mountain is not exceptionally high by global standards, but its remote Arctic setting gives it a rugged character. Its slopes include alpine tundra, larch and birch forests, metamorphic rock, and small glaciers. The easiest route is generally considered a technically straightforward hike on the northwestern side, though snow and ice may require crampons.
A common mix-up is Mount Elbrus, which is higher and is sometimes called Europe’s highest mountain, but it belongs to the Caucasus rather than the Ural range. Narodnaya is also the highest point in European Russia outside the Caucasus.
