Located in Alaska’s central Alaska Range, Denali reaches 20,310 feet (6,190.5 meters) above sea level. Its summit is higher than Mount Logan in Canada, the second-highest mountain on the continent, and Denali is also the highest point in the United States.

The mountain has long been known as Denali, a Koyukon Athabaskan name commonly translated as “the tall one.” It was officially called Mount McKinley by the U.S. federal government from 1917 until 2015, when the name Denali was restored. In 2025, the federal government again designated it Mount McKinley, although Denali remains widely used in Alaska and internationally.

Denali is notable for its enormous base-to-summit rise—about 18,000 feet—which is greater than Mount Everest’s rise above its surrounding terrain. Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper, and Robert Tatum made the first verified ascent in 1913.
