What is the highest mountain above sea level, according to the official height used for Mount Everest?

The story behind the answer

Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, with an official elevation of 8,848.86 metres.

Everest stands in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Its Nepali name is Sagarmatha, while its Tibetan name is Chomolungma. The mountain was named in English after George Everest, a nineteenth-century Surveyor General of India.

A 2020 survey by Nepal and China established the current official height, which includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap. Earlier measurements differed slightly because of surveying methods and changing snow conditions. Everest is the highest point above sea level, but it is not the tallest mountain from base to summit; Mauna Kea in Hawaii is taller when its underwater base is included. The first confirmed ascent was made by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
