What is the height of The Last Supper in meters?

The story behind the answer

The Last Supper is approximately 4.6 meters high.

Leonardo da Vinci’s mural measures about 4.6 meters in height and 8.8 meters in width. Its enormous horizontal format was designed for the end wall of the refectory at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, where the painted room extends the architecture and makes the scene appear like an opening into another space.

The scale also supports the mural’s relationship with the Dominican dining hall. The table and figures were positioned so that the painted scene could visually correspond with the monks’ own meals. Leonardo used one-point perspective, with the orthogonal lines of the ceiling, walls, and table directing attention toward Christ at the center.

The height is sometimes confused with the width, or converted into feet and rounded differently. At roughly 15 feet high and 29 feet wide, the work is much larger than many reproductions suggest. It is also not a traditional fresco: Leonardo used a mixed technique on dry plaster, contributing to the mural’s rapid deterioration and repeated restoration.
