That measurement refers to the highest roof point, located on the building’s large western shell group. It is commonly compared with the height of a 22-storey building, giving visitors a useful sense of scale for a structure whose broad podium can make the roof seem lower from ground level.

The height is measured above sea level, not from the bottom of the foundations or from the top of the podium. This is an important qualification: the Opera House stands on Bennelong Point, and its supporting concrete piers extend far below the site and below sea level.

The 67-metre figure is also distinct from the building’s other dimensions. The complex is about 183 metres long and 120 metres wide at its broadest point. Its roof is made from thousands of precast concrete sections, whose curved arrangement produces the famous sail-like profile.
