The Turning Torso is 190 metres tall. The landmark tower rises in Malmö, Sweden, where its unusual twisting profile makes it one of Scandinavia’s best-known modern buildings.
Santiago Calatrava designed the building after developing the idea from Twisting Torso, a marble sculpture based on the movement of a human body. The completed structure consists of nine five-storey sections rotating around a central core, producing a total 90-degree turn from the base to the top.
Its height is often confused with its floor count. Turning Torso reaches 190 metres but contains 54 floors; these are separate measurements. The tower includes 147 apartments as well as office, meeting and shared amenity spaces, so it is not exclusively residential.
The building began construction in 2001 and was completed in 2005. It was the tallest building in the Nordic region for many years, before Gothenburg’s Karlatornet surpassed it in 2022. Its 190-metre figure refers to the architectural height commonly used in building descriptions.
