FX is the gymnastics scoring abbreviation for floor exercise. The letters are shorthand for the event performed on the spring floor in artistic gymnastics competitions.
Floor exercise is one of the events contested in both women’s and men’s artistic gymnastics. A routine combines tumbling passes with leaps, turns, jumps, balances, and dance or choreographic elements. In women’s gymnastics, the routine is performed to recorded music; men’s floor routines traditionally do not use musical accompaniment.
The floor is not simply an ordinary performance mat. It is a specially constructed sprung apparatus that provides bounce and helps reduce the impact of repeated landings on gymnasts’ joints. The competition surface is square, with boundary lines marking the usable area.
A common mix-up is confusing FX with a move or a score. FX names the event itself, while a gymnast’s result is calculated from difficulty and execution components under the applicable code of points. The same abbreviation appears in training notes, start lists, scoring systems, broadcasts, and official gymnastics documentation.
