The Greek name of the hope that remained in Pandora’s jar is Elpis.
Elpis is the personification of hope in Greek mythology. In Hesiod’s Works and Days, the word appears at the end of the Pandora episode after the evils have escaped and the lid has been replaced. English translations commonly render it simply as “hope.”
Elpis is not one of the Olympian gods and does not receive the extended characterization given to many major mythological figures. Her importance comes from her symbolic position as the final thing left within the vessel.
Readers often assume the myth unambiguously presents hope as a blessing. Ancient commentators and modern scholars have questioned that interpretation because elpis can refer to expectation generally, not only optimistic hope. The text leaves the symbolism open to interpretation.
