What is the Greek name for the jar in the Pandora myth?

The story behind the answer

The Greek name for the jar in the Pandora myth is pithos.

Pithos is the ancient Greek term for a large earthenware storage vessel. Hesiod uses the word in the story commonly called Pandora’s box. Such jars were associated with storing agricultural products and could be much larger than the small containers suggested by the modern English word “box.”

The English title developed through translation history. A Latin rendering used pyxis, a word for a box or small container, and later European writers inherited that image. The phrase became culturally dominant even though “Pandora’s jar” is more faithful to the Greek text.

Pyxis is therefore a tempting but incorrect answer to a question asking for the original Greek container. It is related to the later translation tradition, not the vessel named by Hesiod. The distinction is one of the best-known examples of how a classical myth changed through transmission.
