What is the full name of the central doctor in the TV series House, M.D.?

The story behind the answer

The central doctor in House, M.D. is named Gregory House.

Played by Hugh Laurie, House is a highly unconventional physician who leads a diagnostic-medicine team. His surname gives the series its title, while his first name is usually shortened to Greg by colleagues and friends.

House is characterized by exceptional medical reasoning, a sarcastic manner, dependence on the painkiller Vicodin, and a limp caused by permanent leg damage. The character was partly inspired by Sherlock Holmes: both are brilliant investigators who solve difficult cases through observation and deduction.

The character should not be confused with James Wilson, House’s closest friend, or Lisa Cuddy, the hospital administrator who frequently challenges him. Gregory House remains the central viewpoint character throughout the series, even though many episodes give substantial attention to patients and other doctors.
