What is the full English title of the first Pokémon animated film?

The full English title of the first Pokémon animated film is Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back.

The film was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and produced by OLM for theatrical release. Its story follows Ash Ketchum, Misty, and Brock as they travel to New Island, where the genetically engineered Pokémon Mewtwo challenges Trainers and confronts questions about identity and creation.

The Japanese version premiered on July 18, 1998. The English-language release followed in North America in November 1999 and was distributed by Warner Bros. The film is often shortened to Pokémon: The First Movie, but “Mewtwo Strikes Back” is part of its full English title.

The main feature runs for about 75 minutes. Some releases also included the Pikachu short Pikachu’s Vacation, while later editions added The Uncut Story of Mewtwo’s Origin. A CGI remake, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution, arrived in 2019.
