What is the French title of Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series?

The story behind the answer

The French title of Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series is Nymphéas.

The word nymphéas is the French name for water lilies, the aquatic flowers Monet painted repeatedly in the pond at his garden in Giverny. He began concentrating on the subject in the 1890s and continued exploring it for the rest of his career.

The series includes paintings of flowers, reflections, bridges, and water surfaces, often with no visible horizon. Monet increasingly treated the pond as an almost abstract field of shifting colour and light.

English-language sources usually call the works Water Lilies, while French catalogues use Nymphéas. The title should not be confused with Les Meules, Monet’s French title for his Haystacks series.
