Holden’s roommate Stradlater is named Ward. Ward Stradlater is Holden’s roommate at Pencey Preparatory Academy and one of the most important figures in the novel’s opening section.
Stradlater is portrayed as physically attractive, confident, and socially successful, but Holden sees him as conceited and shallow. He is a popular senior who cares about his appearance and dating life. His polished exterior contrasts with Holden’s suspicion that he is careless and morally “phony.”
The conflict between the two boys intensifies when Stradlater goes on a date with Jane Gallagher, a girl Holden remembers fondly from childhood. Holden worries about Stradlater’s intentions and repeatedly asks whether he had sex with Jane. Stradlater also asks Holden to write an English composition for him, but rejects Holden’s essay when it focuses on Allie’s baseball mitt rather than the assigned room description.
Their argument ends in a fight that Stradlater wins. The confrontation helps push Holden toward leaving Pencey and traveling to New York. Ward is therefore more than a name-detail: he is the immediate rival whose behavior exposes Holden’s jealousy, protectiveness, and emotional instability.
