What is the final species in the original National Pokédex?

The story behind the answer

Mew is the final species in the original National Pokédex.

Mew occupies entry 151, following Mewtwo at entry 150. It is a Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon described as having genetic material from every other Pokémon. That lore explains its ability to learn many different moves and its unusual importance in the original games’ mythology.

Mew was not normally obtainable through ordinary gameplay in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. It was distributed through special events and promotions, which made it mysterious to many early players. Rumors about hidden ways to encounter Mew became part of Pokémon’s early playground culture.

Mewtwo is often mistaken for the final original Pokémon because it is the last species encountered in the main storyline and is numbered 150. The National Pokédex, however, includes Mew as number 151. Later generations added further Mythical Pokémon, but Mew remains the secret capstone of Generation I.
