Pandora is the fictional moon where most of James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar takes place.
In Avatar, Pandora orbits the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The moon is inhabited by the Na’vi, whose environment and culture become central to the conflict between the local population and human resource interests.
The film’s title character, Jake Sully, uses a remotely operated Na’vi body called an avatar to interact with Pandora’s inhabitants. The story’s visual world includes bioluminescent forests, floating mountains, and a complex planetary ecosystem.
Pandora is fictional and should not be confused with Saturn’s real moon of the same name. The film was released in 2009, directed and co-written by James Cameron, and became a major milestone in computer-generated visual effects.
