What is the English title of the Japanese Pokémon games released as Pocket Monsters Red and Green?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese games Pocket Monsters Red and Green were released internationally as Pokémon Red and Blue.

Japan received Pocket Monsters Red and Green in 1996, followed by a special Blue version. For overseas markets, Nintendo used Pokémon Red and Blue, with the international Blue version based on the updated Japanese Blue code, script, and artwork.

The change is easy to miss because Pokémon’s first generation is often casually called Red and Blue worldwide. Japan’s original Green edition was not released internationally, so English-speaking players generally encountered Red and Blue as the first pair.

The two versions contained different version-exclusive Pokémon, encouraging players to connect Game Boy systems with a Game Link Cable. Completing the original Pokédex therefore required trading between versions, regardless of whether players used the Japanese or international releases.
