The 2006 film about a Mexican-American teenager celebrating her quinceañera is titled Quinceañera.
The film was directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. It follows Magdalena, a teenager in Los Angeles whose family and community relationships become complicated as her fifteenth birthday approaches.
The movie uses the celebration as a setting for stories about family, faith, sexuality, class, and belonging. Its title refers to the central cultural event, but the film is not simply a documentary about quinceañera customs.
Quinceañera received major recognition at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the dramatic competition. The film is sometimes distinguished from the 1987 Mexican telenovela with the same title.
