What is the English name of the first Pokémon video game set's Japanese title?

The story behind the answer

The English name of the first Japanese Pokémon game set is Pocket Monsters Red and Green.

The games were released in Japan on February 27, 1996, under the title Pocket Monsters Red and Green. The franchise's Japanese name is often shortened to Pokémon, but the original game titles retained the longer “Pocket Monsters” wording.

When the games were localized for international markets, Nintendo released Pokémon Red and Blue instead. Japan later received a separately distributed Blue version, while the original Green version was not released overseas in its original form. This regional difference is the main reason players may remember the first pair as Red and Blue.

The games introduced the Kanto region, the first 151 Pokémon, and the series' signature emphasis on catching, training, battling, and trading. Pokémon Yellow followed in Japan in 1998 as an enhanced version featuring Pikachu.
