BMW introduced the M70 in the E32 750i and long-wheelbase 750iL in 1987. The 5.0-litre, naturally aspirated V12 was BMW’s first production V12 and gave the top E32 models a smooth, quiet power delivery suited to a flagship luxury sedan.
The M70 used a 60-degree cylinder-bank angle, single overhead camshafts, aluminium construction, and electronic engine management. It also had an unusually redundant control layout: separate engine computers, fuel systems, distributors, and airflow sensors served the two cylinder banks.
