The inline-six engine in the E46 BMW M3 is the S54.
More specifically, the standard E46 M3 used the 3.2-litre S54B32, a high-performance naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine developed by BMW M. It replaced the earlier S50-powered M3 and used features such as Double-VANOS variable valve timing, individual throttle bodies and electronic throttle control. Its characteristically high 8,000-rpm redline helped make the engine a defining part of the E46’s reputation.
The exact output varied by market. European versions were commonly rated at about 343 PS, while North American cars produced about 333 hp because of different emissions and intake specifications. The lightweight E46 M3 CSL received an enhanced version known as the S54B32HP, with a revised carbon-fibre intake and other changes.
The distractors refer to other BMW engine families or generations. The S50 powered earlier M3s, while the N54 and B58 are turbocharged six-cylinder engines from later BMW road cars. The next-generation E90/E92/E93 M3 moved away from an inline-six and used the naturally aspirated S65 V8.
