The Elvish waybread eaten by the Fellowship is called lembas.
Lembas is a special travel food made by the Elves. Galadriel gives it to the Fellowship when they leave Lothlórien, along with boats, cloaks, and other provisions. The cakes are wrapped in leaves, making them portable food for the long journey down the Anduin and toward Mordor.
In Tolkien's world, lembas is unusually sustaining: a small amount can provide strength for a traveler over a long day. Its scarcity and ceremonial nature also distinguish it from ordinary provisions such as bread, dried meat, or cram.
The word is often translated as “waybread,” emphasizing food for a journey. It is not the same as athelas, a healing herb, or miruvor, an Elvish cordial. Cram is a dense travel food associated with the Men of Dale and the Lake-men, which makes it a frequent quiz mix-up.
