What is the elevation of K2 in meters?

The story behind the answer

K2 has an elevation of 8,611 meters above sea level, making it the second-highest mountain on Earth after Mount Everest. It rises in the Karakoram range on the border between Pakistan-administered Kashmir and China’s Xinjiang region.

The name K2 came from the Survey of India’s numbering system: it was the second peak measured in the Karakoram. The mountain is also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, honoring the British surveyor Henry Godwin-Austen. Climbers often call it the “Savage Mountain” because of its steep routes, unpredictable weather, and high fatality rate.

The figure 8,611 meters is the traditional and widely cited elevation used by maps and encyclopedias. A Pakistani-Italian expedition measured the summit at about 8,609 meters in 2014 using satellite navigation, but that result has not displaced the standard published figure in general quiz and reference use.

The nearby value 8,848 meters belongs to Mount Everest’s older commonly cited elevation, while 8,586 meters is associated with another eight-thousander, Kangchenjunga.
